Help MHS Secure a Home: Contact Your Councillor

Since 1999, Mississauga Humane Society has operated as a distributed network of foster homes. Thanks to our incredible volunteers, we’ve been able to save countless cats and dogs from kill shelters and life on the streets. Our foster system ensures that animals wait for their forever homes in comfort and care.

Now, we are ready to take the next step. A physical location will help us grow as an organization and increase our capacity to support animals in need.

Our first step is securing the appropriate zoning approval from Mississauga City Council.

To do this, we need your help! Contact your local councillor and let them know you support MHS’s goal of securing a physical location and zoning approval.

Dear [Councillor Name],

I am writing to express my support for the Mississauga Humane Society’s (MHS) request for zoning approval for a physical location.

In recent years, MHS has undergone a leadership transition and has demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding its operations to better serve animals in need and increase its rescue capacity. As a fully volunteer-run organization, the Mississauga Humane Society currently supports over 100 animals in foster care. Many of these animals require significant veterinary treatment and dedicated socialization efforts before they are ready for adoption. Depending on their individual needs, this process can take months to years, during which they are fully supported in foster care by MHS.

Through its foster network and rescue efforts, the organization plays a critical role in trapping, caring for, and socializing stray animals, as well as providing safe placement for surrendered pets and rescuing animals from overcrowded or high-risk shelters. While municipal animal services are an important part of the city’s infrastructure, they do not have the capacity to meet all needs, particularly for after-hours trapping. In some cases, residents contacting 311 have been referred to the Mississauga Humane Society instead of municipal animal services for assistance.

Granting zoning approval for a physical location would enable the organization to grow its impact and better support the community. A dedicated facility would allow for educational and outreach programming, adoption and fundraising events, centralized storage and distribution of donated supplies, and improved coordination of volunteers and administrative activities. It would also provide a safe, structured environment for animals transitioning into foster care, including space for rehabilitation and socialization.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
