Mississauga Humane Society has never had a shelter, we have always been rooted into the community, working with local pet stores and vet clinics to house some of our cats.
What is a cat room?
A cat room is a place where our adoptable cats live until they find their forever homes. Our cat rooms both house our adoptable cats, and also act as a "shelter" space where the public can come and meet our felines to hopefully find a purrfect match for their family! Look for ADOPTION LOCATIONS near you.
What does a cat room volunteer do?
Our cat room volunteers are truly the heart of our public spaces! This is the team who give up their TIME for the animals; the hardest thing to find extra of, and even more precious to give!
Our amazing volunteers give us an hour of their time each week to come in and do the dirty work; cleaning the litter boxes, sweeping the floors, and cleaning dishes; to make sure our cats have a clean and healthy home while they wait for their families.
These volunteers are rewarded with the affection and trust of our cats (and kittens!) who are in their care. Many of our cats come from the street and some have a great mistrust of humans, but our volunteers get the privilege of being the first people to earn the trust and love of these toughened souls!
And don't worry, our cat room leads make sure everyone gets training and a walk through to know where everything is and what is needed. We trust our volunteers to monitor every cats health and report directly to their lead if anyone looks unwell so they can be sent promptly to the vets to examination!
