What is a Shadow Cat?
A shadow cat is a term we use to refer to any cat that is nervous, scared, shy, or otherwise leery of humans. They are most commonly trapped off the street and have had a harsh beginning in life.
Shadow cats come in all shapes and colours; they all have a tough story to tell, and unfortunately, for many, we can only speculate about the things they have experienced.
What Is The Ideal Foster Home?
If you are curious to know if you would make a good home for a shadow cat, or if you could commit to working with one, let us ask you...
Do you like to finish your day flipping through Netflix? Are you an avid book worm and spend your free time curled up with a book? Do you have days when you work from home? Are you an artist, or creative person? Video Gamer?
All of the above activities and many more like that are PERFECT activities to do with a shadow cat! In the beginning, it helps build a shadow cat's confidence if you are just enjoying the space together! Spending time working on your own hobbies and letting your "Little Shadow" just hang out with you from the comfort of their safe space can make a huge impact on shadow cats! Incorporating treats, and playtime while engaging into your routine helps connect you with your shadow cat.
From Shadow to Shining
When you open up your home to a shadow cat, it can be a very rewarding experience, many of our foster who have worked with Shy/Shadow cats express feeling grateful, honoured, and humbled by the experience.
Building a Shadow Cat's confidence and earning their trust can be done with very simple steps; here are some of the general tips we recommend to all of our new Shadow Fosters:
Using the tips as a base; you can begin to communicate with your cat that you respect them and their insecurities, and that they can rely on you to provide food and see you as an ally and friend.
All the foster homes that open up their hearts to a shadow cat, are committed to a long term investment; to think in a time frame of months or years, not days to weeks, and to expect very slow progress.
Every cat is different, and it is not uncommon for us to hear stories of fosters who were prepared and ready to spend months with their foster, but come to find out the kitty is so hungry for compassion and love they open up and accept pets, and treats, and love quickly!
